PJ'S presentation and notes:

Author Dan Gilmor gives in and starts his own Weblog
He knew once he did this he was entering a new stage in his journalistic career
His readers were now collaborators

OhMyNews.com, Korean online newspaper, 2000
Every citizen is a reporter
“Journalists aren’t some exotic species, they”re everyone who seeks to take new developments, place them in to writing, and share them with others”
Can we have OhMyNews here? Now?
Expanded to diff countries

Readers collectively know more than media professionals do; we recognize what does and doesn’t make sense
“More and more, journalism is going to be owned by its audience”
Internet is the first medium to be owned by audience, journalism will go hand in hand

Gillmor soon realizes for himself through his own blog how important interactive journalism is
People commenting on it back and forth, almost like a mini-forum
As dozens of mainstream journalism organizations began to adopt blogs, the trend begins to accelerate
Cyberjournalist.net keeps tabs of blogs

One incorrect observation: “if we have a blog up and running minutes after a big story breaks, we could beat out Google!”
Facebook did this past March
User supported

CNN and MSNBC looked down on blogging
Saw it as classless, too amateur
Kevin Sites Iraq blog

Linking
Linking to your competitors only increases your readership, something Gilmor learned early on
Would be offending his readers if he didn’t do so
“The authority of a story increases with the links to be best original material from which it was derived.”

CNN was against blogging, yet found themselves and other large networks beginning to depend heavily on viewer materials, amateur video clips and pictures
People will still go to the TV for this info at the time because of “high video streaming bandwith costs online”
Sending in newstips through SMS, “new revolution”
Online magazine offering subscribers a blog on their website for an extra $40 a year, worth it at the time? Still worth it?

The new publisher and user tool will be cell phones. “3G mobile phones”
High speed data networks

Alan's Notes from class:

Dan Gilmore started a web blog.
His readers are his collaborators.
Ohmynews.com
This website started in Korea.
Ohmynews paid journalists to write articles.
The news begins to be owned by it's audience.
Consumers collectively know more about the world.
Citizens and consumers own the Internet.
After his blog posts people communicate with each other on the blog posts.
Add your comment
What does it do for the people that comment?
We can beat google (Facebook beat google with hits)
if Facebook charged money would you stay on Facebook.
Big juggernaut news networks against blogging.
Later most news networks have taken up blogging.
Linking
Linking to your competitors increases your leadership.
Writer's right to link to other blogs.
The progress of technology has allowed citizens to look at more videos
and news on the Internet.
