Andrew's Presentation

Andrew's Notes:
Politics and Technology
Video
-He says he had no control over it…is that a major concern in the future?
-The interviewer also asks if he knew anything about the internet before he went into politics…is the internet going to play a bigger role down the road when a new generation enters the political field?
-Is this a good thing for politics?

Ben Chandler
-2004 was the most important year in the history of political campaigning
-This guy does not look like much but he changed the face of political campaigning forever
-Democrat running for Congress in Kentucky
-Had absolutely no chance in winning
-Made 2000 investment Markos Moulistas who was author of Daily Kos Webblog
-Most respected political blog in Kentucky
-Market Chandler and put up donations
-Spread to other blogs and turned out to obtain a profit of 80000
-With this money he went around touring the state and going on TV

Big Media and Big Money
-Politics is in a transition phase
-Politics used to be operated around the principle of one man one vote
-Now it’s one dollar one vote
-In which dollars are spend on TV to appeal to masses
-Other examples besides Chandler

Other examples
-Arnold Schwarzanger
-We probably know more about politics than him but it does not matter in this society
-Because he had the 2 most important factors: money and media
-Not to mention he was a celebrity so people already knew him
-George Bush
-Targeted the wealthy elite to obtain big money
-Had big media because of his father

Howard Dean
-He in some ways did it better than Chandler
-Meetup
-Went to better blogs and was more outgoing than Chandler
-Personality was his strength
-Used profits on TV
-Unfortunately, his strength was also his biggest weakness and cost him the election
-Why did that cost him the election?
-It goes into Gilmores theory that the right combination of circumstances and candidate personality wins an election, not just funding
Open Source Politics
-Social Networking will revolutionize the way we follow, support and participate in politics
-Really about taking politics to the next level in terms of increasing citizen participation and producing better campaigns
-Gilmore talks about the good and bad with open source politics
-Good: Appeals to masses and gets everyone involved with the process
-Bad: It allows candidates to get personal with advertising to the point where it becomes detrimental to the candidate producing the ad, not who the ad is supposed to target

Controversial Ads
-Lyndon Johnson 1964 campaign vs. Barry Goldwater
-Carly Fiorina attacks Tom Fiscal in California Senate election
-Differences between ads and why they were detrimental to the candidate?
